Grades 9-12
Computer Applications I
This course is highly recommended for all students. The skills students acquire through project-based instruction support academic courses and promote student success throughout high school and in college. Students receive extensive hands-on instruction using Microsoft Office: Publisher, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Access.
Grades 10-12
Accounting I
Accounting is the “Language of Business.” This course offers instruction in the preparation of payroll, balance sheets, income statements,and in the evaluation of the effects of business transactions on the economic health of a business. Students will plan, record, analyze andinterpret financial information for a business through data entry in an accounting system and computerized activities. This planned process for providing financial information is required for successful management. Only basic math skills are used. Career-minded accounting students will also be able to submit an application for an opportunity to participate free of charge in the Georgia Society of CPAs High School Residency Program in the summer at UGA or Georgia Southern.
Business Communication and Presentation
The focus of this course is the creation of presentations and communication projects that are appropriate for the situation, purpose andaudience. Students will use Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, MovieMaker, digital still and video cameras, scanners, and video editing equipment to design projects.
Business Essentials
This class is ideal for any student who plans to own and operate their own business. Using project-based instruction, students focus onforms of business ownership, functions of management, budgeting and finance, technology, communications, legislation, leadership and teamwork, marketing and economics.
Computer Applications II
Prerequisite: Computer Applications I
Using two popular desktop publishing software packages, Adobe PageMaker and Microsoft Publisher, students will produce advertisements, newsletters, brochures, flyers, business letters, and reports. Some of the advanced software features include macros, columns, merging, tables, styles, and automatic outlining. Using current industry spreadsheet and database software, advanced applications will be taught. Continued integration of software will be emphasized.
Grades 11-12
Accounting II
Prerequisite: Accounting I
Students will perform accounting activities for partnerships and corporations following generally accepted accounting procedures. Uncollectible accounts, plant assets, inventory procedures, notes payables and receivables, prepared expenses, unearned and accrued revenues, etc. are analyzed and related adjustments are determined. Manual and computerized accounting systems will be used.
Banking and Investing
Using project-based instruction, students are introduced to the basics of the banking system, bank operating procedures, negotiable instruments, and the deposit and credit functions of banks. Instruction is provided in banking, credit, and personal finance, the history ofbanking, budgeting, negotiable instruments, personal banking accounts, consumer protection laws, banking services, technology in banking,and other related topics.
Legal Environment of Business
In this course students will develop a basic knowledge of the legal system and how business law impacts commerce domestically and internationally. Topics studied include the structure of the court system, ethics, procedural contracts, sales contracts, consumer and agency contracts, employment, personal and real property, insurance, bankruptcy, wills and trusts, impact of technology, and environmental and energy regulation.
