Brookwood Broadcasting Courses
Brookwood Broadcasting is an award-winning program at Brookwood High School that features student-produced work for the BHS student body and community. Students who are interested in Video Production techniques and learning the skills for Broadcast Journalism have an opportunity to participate in a series of classes designed to start at the basic level and extend to more advanced filmmaking skills with a focus to prepare interested students for competitive post-high school Broadcast Journalism programs.

1st Year Coursework – Video/Film I
CT 371 Introduction to Video Production
CT 373 Media & Culture
The focus of the first year courses are to learn the basics of camera use, editing, and project production. Students also learn to operate broadcast studio equipment in order to produce a “live” version of Around Brookwood in Minutes (ABIM is the daily BHS school announcements show) that is shown school-wide on Fridays during Guided Study periods. Editing skills focus on learning to use Casablanca Prestige editing units.

The second year courses continue to produce the weekly ABIM show as well as producing news & school related projects that also air in ABIM shows aired on Fridays or are entered in film competitions & festivals. Second semester focuses on news writing techniques and non-narrative projects like documentaries and Public Service Announcements. Advanced editing techniques are studied and learning new editing software like Avid Express Pro or Studio Xi/Speed Edit are part of the focus of this year’s coursework.

The third year of Broadcasting begins with a study of filmmaking that includes learning to write original scripts, the steps in producing a narrative film, participating in the production of a narrative film, and editing it to a finished project. Students also produce Brookwood Up-Close, a magazine-format show, which presents news, information, and entertainment segments to the BHS student body. Brookwood Up-Close is an opportunity for advanced filmmaking techniques to be put in practice and traditionally results in award-winning shows that entertain and inform the BHS community. Advanced Broadcasting students are afforded opportunities to improve and fine-tune television production skills which can give them an advantage when competing for spots in post-high school Broadcast Journalism programs.
